Where I'm From

I am from made-over marshland, from Seneca apple juice and Wheatena.

I am from the house at the dead end, the driveway where everyone realizes that the sign they passed really did mean There's no way out, silly and finally turns around and goes back to where they started.

I am from acorn and oak, weeping willow and wild roses.

I am from Thanksgiving and  stubbornness  strength of conviction, from Grampa and Gramma and too many great aunts.

I am from sharp wits to defend against sharp tongues.

From "the crust is the most nutritious part" and "pull up your socks."

I am from Eastern European Jewish immigrant stock, from people proud to embrace America's traditions as their own, including the freedom to believe however one chooses, within moral limitations.

I'm from Connecticut, the third generation of our family born here; from "hot dogs and ... BEANS!"

From "I'm handsome too, you know," "I washed them yesterday," and "Gramma, you're a pain in the ass."

I am from the Bloomingdale's box on the shelf in my bedroom, tucked in amongst the birth announcement, the school diplomas, the no-front-teeth messy-haired first grade portrait, the spelling bee certificates, the yellowed essays.
