I'm reading Wicked, by Gregory Maguire, a novel written about the life and history of the Wicked Witch of the West from L. Frank Baum's Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

And I'm loving it.

I love really good fanfic. Oh, stop. It is, too, fanfic. He's taken existing characters, situations, and storylines, and applied carefully thought-out explanations for everything, presented a new perspective and character-correct dialogue, and wrapped it all round a richly detailed, fresh backstoryline that both stands alone and enhances Baum's existing work. Sounds like good fanfic to me.

The only difference is that it's printed and he got paid. Doesn't anyone else see anything vaguely, "Hey!" about that?

I'm not dissing on Maguire for capitalizing on his skills. I'm applauding him. But I know there are others amongst us who can do just as well as he does. Get on it, peeps. You know who you are. Are you going to let Gregory Maguire corner the market on this niche?
