![]() scarlet letter 07/23/2007 = 09:56 AM Dear Sandbox-Pooper over at 6Sentences: If all I wanted was to write my words down and remember them, I would, indeed, buy one of those cute little books with the tiny keys and not let anyone look. Online writing (whether or not you want to refer to it as blogging — or "blah-ging") can consist of anything from profound thoughts and witty turns of phrase, to just a copy-and-pasted news story that amused or enraged. It's about being heard and sharing opinions. I wear a big scarlet "A" on my bodice that stands for "Attention Whore," and I've embroidered it, I think, as prettily as Hester Prynne did her own. Cute little locked up books don't do it for me, because there's another aspect of online writing that I think you're missing, and that's the fact that I like the camaraderie. It's about friendships I'd never have, with people all over the world, if all I did was write in a cute little locked up book. I get to see others' profound thoughts, witty turns of phrase, and copy-and-pasted news stories, and find out what they're thinking. They can see mine if they want, or they can close the browser window and find something more to their tastes. I like that. I don't like when someone's profound thoughts and witty turns of phrase invalidates mine; says, I can do this, because I am a STAR, but you can't, because you are NOBODY. That's not fair. You're picking a fight against the defenseless, and where I come from, we call that bullying. I may not be better than you, I may not even be as good, but I think there's room in the world for both of us. We're doing the same thing, for some of the same reasons, and we ought to be on the same side, not at odds with each other. I don't know where you live, but I'd recognize your house. It's the glass one. Sincerely, Golf "And That Goes for You, Too, Thomas Wolfe" Widow Tags: Neil LaBute drinking: vanilla soy chai that man of meme - September 21, 2008 7:37 PM uncanny danny - September 18, 2008 8:42 AM parrot update - September 14, 2008 1:27 PM frog update - August 30, 2008 10:49 AM
