Perma Penguin
right in the chestnuts
11/22/2007 = 05:01 AM

Some background:

My friend, Ms. F, loves her some turkey and trimmings.

We generally don't see each other for Thanksgiving, since we each have our own respective family things going on, but I often try to make her a turkey dinner the next time she comes over after the holidays, since she loves it so much.

In early 2006, we had Ms. F over for dinner and That Man of Mine complained that the stuffing was not as good as the one I had made a few months earlier for Thanksgiving.

"Well, no," I replied; "I left out the chestnuts."

"Why?" he demanded.

"They're expensive," I told him.

He told me never to leave out the chestnuts again.

Fast forward to November, 2006.

"What the hell is this $15?" he asked, pointing to an item on the supermarket receipt.

"Chestnuts," I replied.

"I saw chestnuts. They were marked $5 a pound."

"I don't buy those," I told him. "You have to roast them and shell them yourself. The extra money for buying them already done up, in a jar, is worth it."

"No, it's not," he said; "next year, you're getting the five-buck chestnuts."

"Fine," I replied, "as long as you will help me roast and shell them."

It's now 2007. And That Man of Mine, the wise, bargain-conscious man that he is, stabbed himself in the hand with a fork whilst pricking chestnuts pre-roast.

I get to buy them in a jar again next year.

And for this, I am truly thankful.
