I missed Blog Crush Day last year (December 15th of 2006) and vowed not to miss it this year, only to find out that the people who schedule these events changed the 2007 date to December 14th.

To my blog crush, I'm sorry, but it's too late for your touching tribute now.

I don't have to say who you are, by the way. If I was going to "out" myself, that should have happened yesterday, according to the rules set forth by the Hall of Random Date-Changings League.

So instead, I'm doing a Miniseries Crush Day.

Stand back, everyone. I'm about to use ... Controversy.

Did you watch Tin Man (an extremely alternate-universe science-fictionish reimagining of The Wizard of Oz)?

I read somewhere that they wouldn't let the characters of DG (the post-modern Dorothy analog played world-wearily yet sweetly by Zooey Deschanel) and Cain (the post-modern Tin Man analog played sexily and hardboiledly by Neal McDonough) follow through on the palpable sexual tension arising between them, not even so far as allowing them a peck on the lips, because children might be watching.

Sorry, but the witch (not the sorceress Azkadellia, but the WITCH witch) was fucking terrifying. I mean, she was scary looking and she zipped around the screen like the creepy girl in the film The Ring, which was the first film since The Exorcist to make me bolt wide awake in fear at the edge of sleep. (I guess I'm afraid of little girls, and you can make of that what you will.)

Anyway, if you think it's okay for a kid to see that, but not to see two adults engage in a perfectly G-rated public display of affection, you've got issues that make me look sane.

Which I am not. Witness:

Sometimes, my stupid little dorkbrain comes up with desperately un-PC but amusing-to-me ideas. I then have to decide whether or not to put them out into the world, wondering if the amusing bit is sufficient to outweigh the desperately un-PC bit.

This is one of those times.

And now ... the Funny Thought:

So I was watching Tin Man, which is the same as but different than The Wizard of Oz, and wondering if, in a similar real life opposing parallel, any gay people were watching it and saying, "I love this" then hastily adding "— but I'm not heterosexual."

I have offended you. Here are your instructions.

Don't bother commenting. Just click the X in the corner and indignantly announce to everyone you know that you're never coming back because I had a random thought and I expressed it.

I'll apologize for offending you, and I'll miss you, but I'm not going to apologize for writing that, and here's why:

Because I know I have at least one gay friend who's going to find that as amusing as I do.

Not because he or she is gay, but because he or she knows that humor is what it is: a bizarre, clever, cute, occasionally cruel (and I'll own that this is, but I maintain that in this case, I'm laughing with my gay friends at straight, uptight people), naughty, and recognizable concept.

In an often-humorless world, laughter is meant to be shared. Sorry that went over your personal head.

Okay, now that we've gotten rid of everyone who thinks I'm evil, let's talk about them behind their backs, because you know they're the ones who watch the original Wizard of Oz and say, "This is one of my favorite movies" then hastily add "— but I'm not gay. No, sirree. Not me."

and: tin man was also kind of violent. if that's okay for kids but DG kissing Cain isn't, we're all as screwed up as the mystic man of the o.z.
