![]() back in brushed metallic gray 02/13/2010 = 07:41 AM Ooh, look, down at the bottom. Yes. I can listen to music and have a beverage whilst writing again, which can only mean one thing: the library is giving me special dispensation. Kidding. Uncle Sam bought me a new computer. Hence the post title, which would have been "Back in Black" if this had been a Dell, which it is not. Not only can I not yet afford a name-brand computer, I'm not sure I will necessarily choose Dell as my brand next time round; not due to any quality issues, but rather due to how annoying it becomes to be part of their supply chain as my profession. If my computer breaks, they have to order a part and our department has to find a way to get it to me within four hours or Dell hates us. Do I need that kind of guilt? So I got a bobo (redneck word for "generic") computer and if it breaks, I'll go back to the store whence it came and have them handle it. Meanwhile, I can demote the library back down to its original purpose: letting me borrow books. The other day, as I was leaving the library, I thanked the staff, as I was trained to do since I was too short to see the top of the checkout desk. A kid of about that same size asked her mom, "Why did that lady thank the librarian?" "I don't know," the mother replied. You don't know? Why don't you know? Books and computer stations, DVDs and quiet places to sit, a printer ... and it's all free (except the printer, which I think charges 25¢ a page, which even I can afford). I cannot ever thank the library enough for keeping me connected till I could get a new computer into my home; not to mention letting me borrow that book about Albert Einstein. It's awesome. Stay tuned. I'll be updating more frequently now, obviously. Upcoming topics include but are not limited to: the 2010 edition of Getting to Know Your Friends; how baked beans saved my life; Bud Buckley versus Paul Gilbert; and how to lower a toilet seat, version 2.0. Pretty soon, you'll be wishing I was back in the library, limited to an hour at a time with a poky connection. Bwahahahaha.
