Perma Penguin
burbles and gurgles
04/24/2010 = 08:32 AM

Once upon a time, I would have these tiny bursts of inspiration, not big enough to talk about but too big not to share, and I would post them in my blog.

I called these "burbles." Sometimes a post would consist of one burble; sometimes I would collect a bunch of burbles and post them with an <hr> tag in between.

I took some shit for that: "For cure-iced sake, can't you pick a topic and stick to it?" or "I was going to comment on one of those, but I can't remember which one."

Now that someone has invented Twitter, it seems that the only time I have something to say in here is when I can't fit it into 140 or fewer characters.

On the one hand, it means I'm up in here less frequently; on the other hand, it's not totally killing my mad writing skills: I'm becoming adept at packing a lot of brain confetti into only a few words.

This may be helping me to become a better writer.

At least, that's my theory, and I'm sticking to it.

With that said, let's see if I can think of anything to talk about that I haven't already burbled on Twitter, or tweeted, or twatted, or whatever.

I'm concerned about the new Doctor Who. I mean, I like Matt Smith, I like the storylines, I like the new companion, but I haven't fallen in love at first sight like I did with Number Ten-Nant. And I'm irked that I'm now finding that to be a prerequisite. Curse you, Scottish Doctor, and curse your cool hair and Converse, while I'm at it.

We went to Boardhouse the other day and I ordered their foot-long hot dog, which is named after a surfboard, of course, but I am probably the only person over the age of twelve (nay, close to the age of forty) who orders it not only because it's a good quality hot dog and I like what they put on it (chili, mustard, onions, jalapeños, cheddar, and Monterey Jack), but because I like making the cashier yell to the grill, "I got a Woody out here."

I have a new niece. Usually, I don't announce this because it seems to happen once a month or so around here (comes of That Man of Mine being one of six siblings, and having a slew of step-siblings as well, one or more of whom, or their spouses, being in varying stages of gestation at any given time); however, I myself have only one sibling that isn't dead to me, and when his wife gives birth, I celebrate my fat arse off. The big problem, this time, is that I gave a Brian Anderson children's book to the first peanut in their gallery, and he hasn't done another one in time for the spare to the heir. Get on it, Brian.

I got the Full Monty (Monty Python's Flying Circus, all four series plus the live shows) for my birthday. I'm enjoying getting caught up, but I keep forgetting that not everyone is as big a geek as I am, so I make Python references at work and get blank stares in reply. I don't bother trying to refrain, though. There are plenty of people there who cultivate their own strains of geekology, so I have plenty of blank stares of my own to dole out. This means you, Tech Guy Who Made Himself a Trojan Helmet Out of Copy Paper.

You may think I should be asking you to follow me on Twitter if you don't want to miss what used to be known as Burbles on a quick-and-dirty basis, but I am loath to advise anyone to sign up for yet another new service. I like Twitter, because I don't have to format anything to speak my short little piece (in fact, I update it via email, so I don't even have to log in), but this, like anything else in the world, is a matter of personal choice.

That said, no matter what happens in the outside world, in here, you will not see Justin Bieber "trending" more than something important, such as beer.
